Leather Shaving Blades

Setting a new precedent of technology transfer to industry, National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) has licensed two Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) to the industry, relating to fleshing and shaving blades used in Pakistani tanneries sector. The licencing agreements were signed between NUST and M/s Shafi Reso Chemical (SRC), Lahore, on April 25, 2018.
There are about 150 leather processing firms in Pakistan that spend nearly PKR 5 Million per firm per year on the import of fleshing and shaving blades, making an annual market of PKR 750 Million. In the absence of locally available quality blades, the leather manufacturers have no choice but to opt for imported ones. Under the licenced agreement, M/s SRC Lahore will now manufacture these blades locally, thus offering quality indigenous blades at significantly reduced cost, leading to substantial savings in foreign exchange.

Three Phase Load Balancing

NUST has successfully licensed out its third Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) to the industry in Karachi. The IPR is for Three Phase Load Balancing (3PLB), developed by Capt Dr Syed Sajjad Haider Zaidi of Pakistan Navy Engineering College (PNEC) Karachi along with team of three students Mr. Muhammad Osama Bin Shakeel, Mr. Syed Ali Jaffer and Mr. Muhammad Faheem Ali. The IPR has been transferred to M/s Bolts (Pvt) Ltd of Karachi, a well-established company offering Engineering, Design, Manufacturing and Fabrication services to the industry. 3PLB device is power electronics and deals with the issue of load unbalancing through uniform distribution of current in all three phase, hence eliminating the neutral current flow. The technology reduces 20% of the electricity bills if it is installed in a three-phase fed house. The scaled version of the device could be installed to cater the industrial heavy loads. It enhances the efficiency of a transformer and prevents the creation of negative sequence voltages.

EKKO is a high-tech electronic device to generate artificial neuro-transmissions that are an advancement in cognitive rehabilitation – a modern concept to rehabilitate patients suffering from neurogenic disorders. This concept is based on a new therapeutic procedure titled “Neurotransmission Cognitive Therapy” to implement neuro-transmission cognitive theory innovated by Mr. Shahbaz Khalid Ranjha, a renowned psychologist and speech pathologist. With help of Mr. Shahbaz and funding from HEC under Technology Development Fund, researchers at NUST have proven the efficacy of this device to overcome symptoms like tongue dysarthria, motor speech aphasia/disphasia, tongue apraxia, cerebral palsy including hemiplegia, facial palsy, fine motor movements, eye squints, writing problems, drooling and chewing disorders and slow cognitive development.

Chatbot

Driven by its thrust to bring about economic revolution through technological intervention and cutting-edge R&D, NUST has been sparing no effort to transcend itself as the leading giver of university-based technologies to the industry.

The licensing agreement for “Reshaping Online Consumer Experience with Data-Driven Personalised Chatbots” was signed between NUST and Aarz Media Pvt Ltd, at NUST Islamabad campus. Waqas Mushtaq, Co-founder and MD at PackageX & VisionX, signed the agreement on the behalf of Aarz Media Pvt Ltd. The IPs belong to Dr Faisal Shafait of SEECS and his research associates. The developed system has the potential of bringing a major shift in the way chatbots are viewed by the e-commerce industry.

This opens a new dimension in chatbot R&D by allowing the visitors of an e-commerce portal to close a transaction from within the chat session, without having to go back and forth on the web pages of a huge number of products. The developed system has the potential of bringing a major shift in the way chatbots are viewed by the e-commerce industry from a fun to have add on to a fundamental pillar of online sales; thereby harnessing the true potential of conversational interfaces in the online consumer market. NUST is also currently in talks with few other companies to license out its other IPs having societal impact and are in the market-ready state.

S-Band TRR Module for Phased-Array Radars

The project was related to development of a Transmit-Receive-Receive (TRR) module for phased array mono-pulse radar for ground based systems. This radar technique enables target detection with a single pulse, as opposed to conventional techniques of emitting multiple pulses in different directions and looking for maximum return. The team worked on sub-modules such as transmitter chain, high power amplifier, receiver chain, power supply, embedded system and mechanical chassis finally culminating into an integrated packaged system. The project was a successful indigenization effort for potential use in air-traffic control and surveillance applications through academia-industry partnership between RIMMS-NUST and RWR (Pvt.) Ltd.

Development of a single diagnostic kit to detect multiple viruses

Development of a single diagnostic kit to detect multiple viruses. It detects viruses like HIV, HCV and HBV simultaneously. Simple, non-invasive, low cost paper strip would help in early diagnosis at home. The lateral flow assay used for the development of this diagnostic kit is based on six specialized parts of paper based strip: sample pad, conjugate pad, nitrocellulose, test line, control line and adsorbent pad. Of these regions the conjugate pad, test line and control line are of importance with respect to specificity of diagnosis. Once saliva is applied to the sample pad, capillary action leads it to conjugate pad, where it specifically binds and is detected via color change.

N-Safe Gel based Hand Sanitizer

Amidst the ever-growing necessity of regular disinfection of hands to help prevent the spread of novel Coronavirus, the safety of millions of Pakistanis is in jeopardy as many uncertified hand sanitizers, with questionable efficacy, have appeared in the market across the country.

N-Safe Hand Sanitizer Gel has been certified for 99.99% microbial control by Pakistan Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (PCSIR). Having received authorization by the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP), N-Safe Hand Sanitizer Gel is being manufactured under license by Pharmatec Private Limited, one of Pakistan’s most dynamic and fast-growing privately owned pharmaceutical companies, which is developing, manufacturing and supplying pharmaceutical generics and value-added products in the market.

saNitize liquid based Hand Sanitizer

NUST has a national mandate and a proven track record of society-specific research & development for high quality, cost-effective, and reliable solutions to the diverse challenges faced by Pakistanis. In continuation of the same spirit and practice, NUST has launched SANITIZE; an Alcohol-Based Hand Sanitizer Liquid, developed according to the World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines 2020 that declare only high percentage alcohol-based disinfectants as effective protection against COVID-19.
